Override Default Search Engine

You can ask QueryDial to use the first fallback search engine that is not popup-only (i.e. first search engine that’s not using {d} or {u} placeholders in the Query URL or Home Page URL) as the default search engine of Safari by enabling the “Use the first universal search engine in the Fallbacks when the search term doesn’t match a shortcut” option in the in-app settings. You must first set one of the search engines that supports shortcut redirection as the default search engine of Safari. All supported search engines are listed in QueryDial’s in-app settings. You also need to enable shortcut redirection for the default search engine.

As an example, suppose you wish to use Startpage to override Safari’s default search engine, you need to

  1. Add Startpage to your library and set it as the first fallback search engine (you can reorder fallback search engines by dragging)
  2. Go to QueryDial’s Settings, toggle the “Use the first universal search engine in the Fallbacks when the search term doesn’t match a shortcut” option.
  3. Suppose you want to always redirect searches from Yahoo to Startpage, you can set Yahoo as your Safari’s default search engine, and enable shortcut redirection for Yahoo in QueryDial’s in-app settings.

Notice that by enabling the “Use the first universal search engine in the Fallbacks when the search term doesn’t match a shortcut” option, you won’t be able to search on shortcut-enabled search engines anymore (except the first fallback search engine itself). Queries with shortcuts will be redirected to the shortcut corresponding platform, while queries without shortcut will always be searched with the first fallback search engine. For this reason, we suggest you only enable shortcut redirection for your main search engine when you enable this option.
